As part of electronic waste (e-waste), the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world, discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs) contain substantial amounts of both valuable and potentially harmful metal, offering valuable opportunities for resource extraction but posing environmental threats. The present comprehensive study is an investigation into the bioleaching of indium from discarded LCD panels, with a particular focus on high pulp density shredded (Sh-LCDs) and powdered (P-LCDs) materials. This study involved an acidophilic consortium, with two pathways, namely the mixed sulfur-iron pathways and sulfur pathways, being explored to understand the bioleaching mechanisms.

Background: Using an experimental study, we examined the link between state moral elevation and stigmatic beliefs surrounding male veterans with military sexual trauma (MST).

Methods: Undergraduate students were presented with a video or written narrative of a male veteran self-disclosing how they struggled with and overcame MST (n = 292). Participants completed measures regarding trait and demographic characteristics at baseline, then measures immediately after the disclosure stimulus to assess immediate elevation and stigma-related reactions.

Wearable sensors are an important tool in the study of head acceleration events and head impact injuries in sporting and military activities. Recent advances in sensor technology have improved our understanding of head kinematics during on-field activities; however, proper utilization and interpretation of data from wearable devices requires careful implementation of best practices. Optical pulse detection 'photoplethysmography' (PPG) provides a means of low cost and unobtrusive physiological monitoring that is popular in many wearable devices. However, the accuracy, robustness and generalizability of single-wavelength PPG sensing are sensitive to biological characteristics as well as sensor configuration and placement; this is significant given the increasing adoption of single-wavelength wrist-worn PPG devices in clinical studies and healthcare. Since different wavelengths interact with the skin to varying degrees, researchers have explored the use of multi-wavelength PPG to improve sensing accuracy, robustness and generalizability.

Extracting accurate heart rate estimations from wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG) devices is challenging due to the signal containing artifacts from several sources. Deep Learning approaches have shown very promising results outperforming classical methods with improvements of 21% and 31% on two state-of-the-art datasets. This study describes the results of anterior-posterior impacts conducted on the mandibles of 22 male postmortem human subjects (PMHSs). The objective of this study was to develop an injury criterion for the mandible based on blunt impact while the jaw was restrained. Previous studies have attempted to characterize the injury risk of blunt impact to the mandible; however, due to the translation of the mandible during impact and a limited number of fractured specimens, previous studies were not able to produce an injury criterion.
