Using Audit to Improve End-of-Life Care in a Tertiary Cancer Centre.

High-quality end-of-life care (EoLC) is a critical yet often underemphasised component of oncology care. Several shortcomings in the delivery of EoLC for oncology patients in our centre during the COVID-19 pandemic were identified in our initial 2021 audit. In 2022, we introduced a care of dying patients proforma, an EoLC quality checklist, targeted education and training for staff, and an expanded end-of-life (EoL) committee.

Workplace mental health screening for first responders: cluster-randomised control trial.

Background: Although workplace mental health screening is often implemented to aid early identification of mental health symptoms and facilitate access to treatment, supporting evidence is limited.

Aims: We aimed to evaluate the effect of independently conducted, confidential, online mental health screening, paired with automated tailored feedback recommending referral services, on help-seeking and psychological distress.

Method: We conducted a cluster-randomised controlled trial with firefighters from an Australian fire and rescue service.

Calcium-dependent regulation of physiological vs pathological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophic growth contributes to the adaptative response of the heart to meet sustained increases in hemodynamic demand. While hypertrophic responses to physiological cues maintains or enhances cardiac function, when triggered by pathological cues, this response is maladaptive, associated with compromised heart function, although initially, this response maybe adaptive with preserved function. Since cues and activated pathways associated with both forms of hypertrophy overlap, the question arises as to the mechanism that determines these different outcomes.
