Dissolved trivalent manganese in forest soils - interactions of natural organic ligands with manganese oxides.

The presence of dissolved trivalent manganese (Mn) in soils has been neglected largely due to its rapid disproportionation. However, natural organic ligands (NOLs) complex and stabilize Mn by the formation of stable Mn-NOL complexes. Our objectives were (i) to investigate the influence of NOLs on the dissolution of synthetic Mn oxides, (ii) to perform the speciation analysis of the resulting dissolved total Mn (Mn) pool, and (iii) to elucidate the principles governing abiotic formation of Mn-NOL complexes.

Assessment of cardiac biomarker "point-of-care" testing as postmortem diagnostic tool.

In cardiac death, some entities, such as arrhythmia or nonocclusive myocardial ischemia, are not associated with clear and certain macroscopic surrogates of cardiac death. Cardiac biomarker point-of-care testing (POCT) seems suitable for further improving postmortem diagnostics in legal medicine casework. Considering the preanalytic phase, the present study aims to define criteria for blood samples suitable for POCT and assess the diagnostic performance of postmortem cardiac biomarker POCT.

Enhancing Forensic Diagnostics: Structured Reporting of Post-Mortem CT versus Autopsy for Laryngohyoid Complex Fractures in Strangulation.

Background: The purpose of this study was to establish a standardized structured workflow to compare findings from high-resolution, optimized reconstructions from post-mortem computed tomography (pmCT) with autopsy results in the detection of fractures of the laryngohyoid complex in strangulation victims.

Method: Forty-two strangulation cases were selected, and pmCT scans of the laryngohyoid complex were obtained. Both pmCT scans and autopsy reports were analyzed using a structured template and compared using Cohen's kappa coefficient (κ) and the McNemar test.

Retrograde dye perfusion of the proximal aorta - A postmortem technical study.

Introduction: Multiple cardiovascular conditions can lead to unexpected fatality, which is defined as sudden cardiac death. One of these potentially underlying conditions is aortic regurgitation, which can be caused by discrete changes of the geometry of the proximal aorta. To analyze aortic valve competency and furthermore to elucidate underlying pathological alterations of the coronary arteries and the vasa vasorum a perfusion method to simulate a diastolic state was designed.

Gunshots through laminated glass: expelled compounded fragments as a function of bullet type.

In the frame of an experimental setting, the formation of round-shaped compounded glass fragments on the exit site after gunshots through a windshield was examined. For that purpose, a 9 × 19 mm pistol (HK P30) and two different cartridges containing (a) a full metal jacketed round-nosed projectile and (b) a deformation projectile were used. On the basis of 52 gunshots, the morphology, impact angles and terminal ballistics of occurring compounded glass fragments were examined.

She sustained three wounds: An, ultimately fatal, penetrating head wound, a graze wound across her forehead, and a tangential, perforating, wound, with bullet entry over the medial sternum and exit through the right flank.

Postmortem fluorescence angiography of the explanted human heart.

Within the scope of this technical report, the feasibility of indocyanine green (ICG) as a fluorescent agent for postmortem angiography of the heart is tested. The study included 4 deceased persons with no respective medical history of heart diseases. The basic patterns of findings in ICG fluorescence angiography associated with healthy hearts are presented.

Changes in gene expression patterns in postmortem human myocardial infarction.

In murine models, the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in myocardial infarction (MI) has been reported to be the result of tissue injury and inflammation. In the present study, mRNA expression of iNOS, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was investigated in postmortem human infarction hearts. Since HIF-1α is the inducible subunit of the transcription factor HIF-1, which regulates transcription of iNOS and VEGF, the interrelation between the three genes was observed, to examine the molecular processes during the emergence of MI.

Mongolian spots (MS) are congenital dermal conditions resulting from neural crest-derived melanocytes migration to the skin during embryogenesis. MS incidences are highly variable in different populations. Morphologically, MS present as hyperpigmented maculae of varying size and form, ranging from round spots of 1 cm in diameter to extensive discolorations covering predominantly the lower back and buttocks.

Feasibility of an accelerated PVAL method for the collection of GSR and biological traces.

The polyvinyl alcohol method (PVAL) is known as an effective technique to thoroughly collect traces of gunshot residue (GSR) from different surfaces, e.g., from hands or gunshot wounds.

Multispecies blow fly myiasis combined with hypothermia in a man assumed to be dead.

We describe the case of a man who was found with severe hypothermia and advanced myiasis involving five species of blow flies, which eventually led to a transtibial amputation of the man's right leg. A case of such a heavy and species-rich infestation with fly larvae in an urban environment is extraordinary and has, to our knowledge, never been described so far. Best practice in cases such as this one demands accurate species identification not only to ensure appropriate treatment and pest management but also, from a forensic point of view, to explore the possibility of third-party responsibility.

A case of fatal perimyocarditis due to a rare disease.

Although myocarditis is caused by viral infections in about 50% of cases in European countries, various other causative agents are known. We report the case of a 51-year-old man who died several months after being diagnosed with asthma by his general practitioner. This diagnosis had been confirmed by a pulmonologist approximately 6 weeks before the man's death.

The 'triple contrast' method in experimental wound ballistics and backspatter analysis.

In practical forensic casework, backspatter recovered from shooters' hands can be an indicator of self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. In such cases, backspatter retrieved from inside the barrel indicates that the weapon found at the death scene was involved in causing the injury to the head. However, systematic research on the aspects conditioning presence, amount and specific patterns of backspatter is lacking so far.
