In the 2021 Report on Carcinogens, the National Toxicology Program of the United States listed 63 known human carcinogens. While many of the listed agents are environmental factors, only 2, aflatoxin and vinyl chloride, have been definitely linked to types of liver cancer. Aflatoxin is well known to increase the risk of HCC, while vinyl chloride is a cause of angiosarcoma of the liver.

Background: Oral contraceptive use has been suggested to increase the risk of liver cancer. Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded in 1999 that there was sufficient evidence of an association, this was based on case-control studies with few liver cancer cases. We aimed to provide more robust epidemiological evidence on this association by analysing data from two large prospective UK cohorts and additionally conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of previous observational studies.

Recently, studies have reported that pan-viral serology signatures may be predictive for liver cancer development. However, whether these same findings are observed for prospective studies has not been previously investigated. The nested case-control analysis included 191 persons who developed liver cancer and 382 controls from the PLCO prospective cohort.

In most countries, males have ~2-3 times higher incidence of primary liver cancer than females. Sex hormones have been hypothesized to contribute to these differences, but the evidence remains unclear. Using data from the UK Biobank, which included ~200,000 males and ~180,000 postmenopausal females who provided blood samples at recruitment, we estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for a doubling in hormone concentration from multivariable adjusted Cox regression for circulating total testosterone, sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and free testosterone concentrations and risk of primary liver cancer.

Background: The associations of vegetarian diets with risks for site-specific cancers have not been estimated reliably due to the low number of vegetarians in previous studies. Therefore, the Cancer Risk in Vegetarians Consortium was established. The aim is to describe and compare the baseline characteristics between non-vegetarian and vegetarian diet groups and between the collaborating studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Canada legalized non-medical cannabis in 2018, and a study surveyed 1,759 youth (ages 12-25) to assess their knowledge and perceptions of cannabis since then.
  • Most participants received education on the harms of cannabis, focusing on topics like driving, mental health issues, and addiction; users displayed greater knowledge about its effects compared to non-users.
  • Vaping was seen as the most harmful method, with benefits noted by users including relaxation and better sleep, but concerningly, half had been in a car with a high driver, indicating a need for improved cannabis education.

Background: With the legalization of non-medical cannabis in Canada, cannabis is commonly used in the community and nurses and nursing students are likely to engage in clinical practice discussions around cannabis use for both medical and non-medical purposes. However, whether having previous experience using cannabis influences nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards cannabis remains unclear.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, educational needs, and use of cannabis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed dietary protein intake, especially from dairy sources, among 114,217 UK Biobank participants to assess links with colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers over a median follow-up of 9.4 years.
  • Results showed lower risks of colorectal cancer with higher intakes of total dairy protein, milk protein, and dietary calcium, but higher risks of prostate cancer with milk protein and dietary calcium.
  • The researchers concluded that more studies are needed to explore how dairy products impact cancer risk and to clarify the roles of dietary protein and calcium in these associations.

  • The study aimed to understand the link between different types of adiposity (metabolically unfavorable and favorable) and the risk of aggressive prostate cancer using Mendelian randomization.
  • Researchers analyzed data from the PRACTICAL consortium, including over 15,000 aggressive prostate cancer cases, to evaluate the genetic influence of various adiposity traits on cancer risk.
  • The findings indicated no strong associations between either type of adiposity or body mass index (BMI) and aggressive prostate cancer, suggesting metabolic factors aren't the primary influencers of prostate cancer risk, but further research is needed to investigate other potential links.

Article Synopsis
  • Whole grain and fiber consumption may lower the risk of colorectal cancer, with specific gut bacteria and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production playing a significant role.
  • In a study of over 114,000 UK Biobank participants, a link was found between carbohydrate intake and the incidence of colorectal cancer over a median follow-up of 9.4 years, showing that non-free sugars and whole grain fiber are protective.
  • The benefits of whole grains may be more pronounced in individuals who are genetically predisposed to produce higher levels of butyrate, indicating that genetics influence the effectiveness of dietary choices in cancer prevention.

Background: Recent studies have reported that the associations between dietary carbohydrates and cardiovascular disease (CVD) may depend on the quality, rather than the quantity, of carbohydrates consumed. This study aimed to assess the associations between types and sources of dietary carbohydrates and CVD incidence. A secondary aim was to examine the associations of carbohydrate intakes with triglycerides within lipoprotein subclasses.

Background: Following a vegetarian diet has become increasingly popular and some evidence suggests that being vegetarian may be associated with a lower risk of cancer overall. However, for specific cancer sites, the evidence is limited. Our aim was to assess the associations of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets with risks of all cancer, colorectal cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer, and prostate cancer and to explore the role of potential mediators between these associations.
