Objective: Seizure unpredictability is a significant burden in the lives of people with epilepsy. Previously published approaches to seizure forecasting analyzed intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings and showed that seizures can be forecast above chance levels. Although passive observation of the brain might provide some insights, repeated active perturbation of the cortex and measuring the cortical response may provide more direct information about time-varying cortical excitability.

Article Synopsis
  • Developmental regression is the loss of previously acquired skills in children, commonly seen in conditions like Autism, Rett syndrome, and Landau Kleffner syndrome.
  • Research on developmental regression has been ongoing for over a century, but gaps remain due to limitations in study designs and inconsistent definitions across different conditions.
  • This overview aims to clarify key terms, clinical measures, and the effects of developmental regression on both children and their caregivers, while proposing future research directions to address existing knowledge gaps.

Altered neural connectivity in neurodevelopmental disorders is likely subtle, meaning that neuroimaging literature studying development has produced heterogeneous findings. A recent study, published in this issue, illustrates the translational potential of functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging findings as a biomarker for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder. Importantly, it highlights the overlap between disorders, emphasising the need for transdiagnostic and dimensional approaches in neurodevelopment.

Aim: In an attempt to clarify the debate surrounding the diagnostic validity of childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD), we systematically reviewed its characteristics and compared it with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Method: Four databases were searched (PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Web of Science). Included articles had participants with CDD, as defined by symptoms present in the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision.
