Immunocompromised patients were excluded most of the time from trials testing corticosteroids in COVID-19. This study aimed to assess the associations between early corticosteroid use and (1) mortality at day 60, and (2) the occurrence of nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients with severe COVID-19 admitted to the ICU. It was a multicentre retrospective study, achieved in French ICUs of the Outcomerea™ network and medical ICUs of 4 other hospitals in France.

Methods: This monocentric, prospective pilot study included patients admitted to the ICU with ARF and requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for more than 48 h, between February 2021 and April 2024. The weaning protocol (WP) was initiated after a successful 30-minute SV trial with pressure support (PS).
We investigated whether baseline levels of biomarkers related to endotheliopathy, thromboinflammation, and fibrosis were associated with clinical outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. We analyzed the associations between baseline levels of 21 biomarkers and time to hospital discharge and change in NEWS-2 score in patients from DisCoVeRy trial. We fitted multivariate models adjusted for baseline ISARIC 4C score, disease severity, D-dimer values, and treatment regimen.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) is common in intensive care units (ICUs), yet optimal amikacin dosing in this context remains poorly understood.
Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study across 18 French hospitals from April 2020 to January 2022. Adult ICU patients (aged > 18 years) receiving their first amikacin dose while on RRT were included.
Purpose: Onco-hematological (OH) patients face significant cardiovascular risks due to malignancy and drug toxicity. Data are limited on the characteristics and outcomes of OH patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) in intensive care units (ICUs).
Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 214 OH patients with CS across 22 ICUs (2010-2021).
Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) may be worsened by early systemic insults. We aimed to investigate the association of early systemic insults with outcomes of critically ill patients with severe SAE.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis using data from the French OUTCOMEREA prospective multicenter database.

Background: We assessed the effect of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) on mortality and length of stay after high flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) failure among patients with severe hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia.
Methods: In this multicenter, retrospective study, we enrolled COVID-19 patients admitted in intensive care unit (ICU) for severe COVID-19 pneumonia with a HFNO failure from December 2020 to January 2022. The primary outcome was to compare the 90-day mortality between patients who required a straight intubation after HFNO failure and patients who received NIV after HFNO failure.
Background: Current guidelines for adult patients with pneumococcal meningitis (PM) recommend initial management in intermediate or intensive care units (ICU), but evidence to support these recommendations is limited. We aimed to describe ICU admission practices of patients with PM.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the French medico administrative database of consecutive adult patients with PM and sepsis criteria hospitalized between 2011 and 2020.
Introduction: COVID-19 Related Acute Respiratory Syndrome (C-ARDS) is characterized by a mismatch between respiratory mechanics and hypoxemia, suggesting increased dead-space fraction (DSF). Prone position is a cornerstone treatment of ARDS under invasive mechanical ventilation reducing mortality. We sought to investigate the impact of prone position on DSF in C-ARDS in a cohort of patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation.

Background: Data on ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in COVID-19 and influenza patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) are scarce. This study aimed to estimate day-60 mortality related to VAP in ICU patients ventilated for at least 48 h, either for COVID-19 or for influenza, and to describe the epidemiological characteristics in each group of VAP.
Design: Multicentre retrospective observational study.
Background: Community Acute Bacterial Meningitis (CABM) is a rare infectious disease leading to important impairments. Our aim was to describe CABM survivors' quality of life (QOL) 12 months post-CABM and to assess its associations with CABM sequelae.
Methods: Patients included in the CABM COMBAT cohort were evaluated one year after the CABM episode.
Purpose: Despite antiviral therapy (ART), 800,000 deaths still occur yearly and globally due to HIV infection. In parallel with the good virological control and the aging of this population, multiple comorbidities [HIV-associated-non-AIDS (HANA) conditions] may now be observed.
Methods: HIV adult patients hospitalized in intensive care unit (ICU) from all the French region from university and non-university hospital who participate to the OutcomeRea™ database on a voluntary basis over a 24-year period.
Background: Brain abscesses (BA) are severe lesions in the course of infective endocarditis (IE). We compare the bacteriological, clinical data, background, associated lesions, and outcome of IE patients with and without BAs, and assess the MRI characteristics of BAs.
Methods: Retrospective study of 351 consecutive patients with definite IE (2005-2020) and at least one brain MRI.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) incidence is high among critically ill COVID-19 patients. Its attributable mortality remains underestimated, especially for unresolved episodes. Indeed, the impact of therapeutic failures and the determinants that potentially affect mortality are poorly evaluated.

Background: Left atrial dissection is a rare and a potentially fatal complication of cardiac surgery. Multi-modal imagery is helpful for the diagnosis and to guide the treatment.
Case Presentation: We report the case of a 66-year-old female patient who underwent a combined mitral and aortic valve replacement for degenerative valvular disease.
Background: Few data are available on the impact of bacterial pulmonary co-infection (RespCoBact) during COVID-19 (CovRespCoBact). The aim of this study was to compare the prognosis of patients admitted to an ICU for pneumonia and for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia with and without RespCoBact.
Methods: This was a multicentre ( = 11) observational study using the Outcomerea© database.
Objective: To explore the impact of improved intensive care for COVID-19 patients on the prevalence of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS).
Design: Ambispective cohort study.
Patients: Post-intensive care unit COVID-19 patients from the first and second waves of COVID-19.
Background: Vilobelimab, an anti-C5a monoclonal antibody, was shown to be safe in a phase 2 trial of invasively mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19. Here, we aimed to determine whether vilobelimab in addition to standard of care improves survival outcomes in this patient population.
Methods: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre phase 3 trial was performed at 46 hospitals in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, Russia, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and South Africa.
