The species is probably native to Japan but has an invasive nature; it warrants special attention in India because it is attacking an economically important fruit crop.

Pyrene fluorescence in aqueous solutions of two surface active ionic liquids, namely, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was investigated in presence of a biopolymer sodium alginate. The principal objective of this study was to explore the influence of the length of the hydrocarbon tails of these surface active ionic liquids on the possible location of the probe (pyrene) molecules in presence of the additive. While an abrupt decrease in the values of the ratio of the intensity of the first vibronic band to that of the third band of pyrene emission spectrum with concentration was observed for 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride in presence of sodium alginate like the polymer-free case reported earlier, there was a peculiar reversal for 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride + sodium alginate.

The influence of the relative permittivity of the solvent medium on the single-chain dimension and flexibility of sodium polystyrenesulfonate chains has been investigated in mixed solvent media of methanol and water using viscosity experiments. Particular attention has been paid to explore the effect of the added low-molar-mass electrolyte. The root-mean-square (rms) radii of gyration of the chains in the unperturbed state have been calculated by applying the Flory model, while the intrinsic persistence lengths by the Benoit-Doty equation on the basis of the Kratky-Porod worm-like chain model.

Insight into the role of electrostatic interactions on the hydrodynamics and conformation of aqueous sodium alginate was gained through viscometry. Alginate chains are found to shrink in salt-free solutions more rapidly with increasing polymer concentration compared to salt-solutions. For salt-free solutions, a reduced polymer concentration of less than 1 suffices to make the alginate coil volume half of that at infinite dilution which becomes invariant when the reduced concentration exceeds 8.

Polyion-counterion interactions in sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) in methanol-water media have been investigated conductometrically with reference to their variations with polyelectrolyte concentration, relative permittivity and the type and concentration of added electrolytes. The specific conductance data in polyelectrolyte-salt solutions were analyzed using an equation recently developed by us following the scaling description for the configuration of a polyion chain according to Dobrynin et al. Excellent quantitative agreement between the experimental results and those obtained with the new equation developed was observed.

Polyion-counterion interactions in sodium carboxymethylcellulose-ethylene glycol-water ternary system have been investigated with special reference to their variations with the polyelectrolyte concentration, the medium relative permittivity and the temperature using electrical conductance measurements. The experimental data have been analyzed on the basis of a model for semidilute polyelectrolyte conductivity which takes into account the scaling arguments proposed by Dobrynin et al. Concentration-dependent moderate counterion condensation (24-33%) was observed.

Taylor dispersion is used to measure ternary mutual diffusion coefficients (D(ik)) for aqueous solutions of decylsulfobetaine (SB10) (1) + dodecylsulfobetaine (SB12) (2), SB10 (1) + SB14 (2), and SB12 (1) + SB14 (2) mixed zwitterionic micelles. Cross-coefficient D(21) for the coupled flow of surfactant 1 produced by a concentration gradient in surfactant 2 is relatively small for these solutions, but D(12) reaches values as large as the main D(ii) coefficients. The results are interpreted by using the equation D(ik) = partial differential(C(i)D(i))/ partial differentialC(k) to relate the ternary mutual diffusion coefficients to the concentration-weighted average diffusion coefficients D(i) of the micellar and free-monomer forms of the surfactants.

Precise measurements on the electrical conductivity of solutions of sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose in acetonitrile/water mixed-solvent media containing 10, 20, and 40 vol % of acetonitrile are reported as a function of temperature. The degree of substitution of carboxymethylcellulose used was 0.70, and the concentrations were varied from approximately 1 x 10(-4) to approximately 1 x 10(-2) equiv L(-1).
