There are many possible causes for acute encephalitis, and systemic causes can be easily overlooked. We report a woman with initial status epilepticus, marked working memory impairment and ataxia, which developed 1 week following the ChAdOx1 SARS-CoV-2 (Astra-Zeneca) vaccination. Although lumbar puncture detected a paraprotein, it was not until she developed the hallmark cutaneous features of scleromyxoedema several months later that we recognised this as the dermato-neuro syndrome.

Bariatric surgery is being undertaken more frequently in response to rising levels of obesity but is increasingly also requested as a cosmetic choice. Nutritional deficiencies are a recognised consequence of gastrectomy, with potentially severe and permanent neurological sequelae. We present two cases of acute, severe polyneuropathy following sleeve gastrectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to describe the clinical features and outcomes of patients with myelopathy and neuropathy linked to recreational nitrous oxide use from 2016 to 2023.
  • Twelve patients (6 women, average age 27.5) showed symptoms like numbness, weakness, and mental changes, with some using large amounts of nitrous oxide and vitamin B12 supplements.
  • At follow-up, 75% of patients managed to achieve functional independence, highlighting the significant health concerns related to nitrous oxide abuse. *

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease, caused by a GGC repeat expansion in the 5'-untranslated region of NOTCH2NLC, is a rare neurodegenerative condition with highly variable clinical manifestations. In recent years, the number of reported cases have increased dramatically in East Asia. We report the first four genetically confirmed cases of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease in New Zealand, all having Polynesian ancestry (three New Zealand Māori and one Cook Island Māori).

We conducted a retrospective study to determine the incidence and frequency of different subtypes of encephalitis in patients aged 15 and older in the Auckland and Northland regions of New Zealand between 2009 and 2018. Residents in Auckland and Northland presenting with encephalitis between 2009 and 2018 were identified from three overlapping databases: positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) viral polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, CSF neuronal antibody requests, and CSF neuronal antibody tests sent overseas. A diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis required fulfilment of diagnostic criteria published by Graus and colleagues (2016).

Background and Purpose- In ischemic stroke, body temperature is associated with functional outcome. However, the relationship between temperature and outcome may differ in the intraischemic and postischemic phases of stroke. We aimed to determine whether body temperature before or after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for large vessel occlusion stroke is associated with clinical outcomes.
