Triboelectric sensors are known for their ultrahigh sensitivity and wide-range detectability of tactile force/pressure, all while being self-powered. However, the energy harvesting efficiency of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is often limited by relatively low output power density, when compared to other state-of-the-art microgenerators. To address this challenge and achieve high force/pressure detection while maintaining excellent tactile resolution, a hybrid nanogenerator is proposed that comprises of both triboelectric and piezoelectric components within a ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer matrix.

A periodically crack-free, wrinkled (wavelength of around 850 nm) stamp was prepared by surface oxidation of an uniaxially stretched poly(dimethylsiloxane) elastomeric substrate and was used as a template to transfer aligned patterns of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) onto PS surfaces by wet stamping. The morphology of the aligned CNC coatings on PS was then compared with randomly deposited CNCs on PS using atomic force microscopy.

By the exploitation of different morphological structures of calcium sulfate, which acts as the active filler in a soft elastomer matrix, the magnitude of filler reinforcement can be reversibly altered, which will be reflected in changes of the final stiffness of the material. The higher stiffness, in other words, the higher modulus of the composites, is realized by the in situ development of fine nanostructured calcium sulfate dihydrate crystals, which are formed during exposure to water and, further, these highly reinforcing crystals can be transformed to a nonreinforcing hemihydrate mesocrystalline structure by simply heating the system in a controlled way.
