Injuries of the hand and wrist are commonly encountered in the emergency department. Though they are rarely life-threatening, there is potential for significant patient pain, morbidity, and long-term functional loss if they are not treated appropriately. A thorough and focused examination and plain radiographs are sufficient to diagnose most hand injuries, with outpatient referral to a hand specialist when indicated.

Background: In the era of extreme emergency department (ED) boarding, hospital systems are using novel patient care areas to provide ongoing acute care. In any new patient care environment, there is a high risk for latent safety threats (LSTs), which can negatively affect patient outcomes. A series of in situ systems-based simulations were conducted to identify potential LSTs prior to the opening of a novel mobile care unit (MCU) in a tertiary hospital.

Background: Simulation-based medical education has been used in medical training for decades. Rapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) is a novel simulation strategy that uses iterative practice and feedback to achieve skill mastery. To date, there has been minimal evaluation of RCDP vs standard immersive simulation (IS) for the teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation to graduate medical education (GME) learners.

Introduction: Survival from traumatic cardiopulmonary arrest (TCA) has been reported at a rate as low as 0-2.6% in the civilian pre-hospital setting, and many consider resuscitation of this group to be futile. The aim of this investigation was to describe patients who received cardiac massage during TCA in a battlefield setting; we also aimed to identify predictors of survival.
