Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a serious health concern among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Coinfection with HAV and HIV is linked to increased hepatitis A viral load, elevated HIV RNA, and potential disruption of HIV treatment caused by liver dysfunction. Three vaccines for the prevention of HAV are currently approved for usage in the United States: 2 monovalent inactivated vaccines (hepatitis A vaccine, inactivated [GSK] and hepatitis A vaccine, inactivated [Merck]) and 1 hepatitis A (inactivated) and hepatitis B (recombinant) vaccine (GSK).

A fungal nightmare: A rare and deadly presentation of disseminated histoplasmosis.

Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus commonly associated with localized pulmonary disease but can often spread to various organs causing disseminated histoplasmosis. Once the disseminated disease reaches the central nervous system (CNS), mortality rates increase significantly and can reach up to 40 %. The prognosis is frequently determined by adequate and timely diagnosis.

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been widely applied in many countries and regions for monitoring COVID-19 transmission in the population through testing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater. However, the amount of virus shed by individuals over time based on the stage of infection and accurate number of infections in the community creates challenges in predicting COVID-19 prevalence in the population and interpreting WBE results. In this study, we measured SARS-CoV-2, pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), and human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in longitudinal fecal samples collected from 42 COVID-19 patients for up to 42 days after diagnosis.

The Role of the Gut, Urine, and Vaginal Microbiomes in the Pathogenesis of Urinary Tract Infection in Women and Consideration of Microbiome Therapeutics.

The gut, urine, and vaginal microbiomes play significant roles in the pathogenesis of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs). Analysis of these microbiota has shown distinct associations with urinary tract infections. Encouraging data indicate that rUTIs may be responsive to microbiome treatments such as fecal microbiota transplantation, expanding potential treatments beyond antibiotics, hydration, and behavioral interventions.

Burden of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in People Living with HIV.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) pose a serious public health concern for people living with HIV (PLH). PLH experience a delayed and weakened response to many vaccines available, compared to the general population. Lower seroconversion rates, along with a decreased efficacy and durability of vaccines, increases the susceptibility of PLH to VPDs.

The Masquerading Myocarditis: A Case of Late Recurrence of Acute Myocarditis Presenting as "Peripartum Cardiomyopathy".

Myocarditis is a potentially fatal medical condition with varied etiologies. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) refers to systolic dysfunction occurring toward the end of pregnancy or in the months following delivery; it is a diagnosis of exclusion. We present a patient with chest pain, bipedal edema, markedly elevated troponins, electrocardiogram (EKG) findings that were concerning for myocardial infarction, and a significantly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) on the echocardiogram.

mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2 mRNA vaccines have reduced neutralizing activity against the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant emerged in November 2021 and consists of several mutations within the spike. We use serum from mRNA-vaccinated individuals to measure neutralization activity against omicron in a live-virus assay. At 2-4 weeks after a primary series of vaccinations, we observe a 30-fold reduction in neutralizing activity against omicron.

The BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) and mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccines generate potent neutralizing antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the global emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants with mutations in the spike protein, the principal antigenic target of these vaccines, has raised concerns over the neutralizing activity of vaccine-induced antibody responses. The Omicron variant, which emerged in November 2021, consists of over 30 mutations within the spike protein.

Prognostic indicators of survival in patients with small-cell lung cancer at a tertiary care center in Lebanon.

Objective: Small-cell lung cancer is a very aggressive tumor associated with high invasiveness and ease of metastasis and therefore poor prognosis. In the literature, several demographical, clinical as well as pathological factors including age, stage, gender and smoking were cited as independent prognosticators of survival.

Material And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study that includes 222 patients diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer between 2010 and 2019.

Evidence of axonal damage in cerebellar peduncles without T2-lesions in multiple sclerosis.

Background And Aim: Cerebellar peduncles (CP) can be probed by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to evaluate the integrity of cerebellar afferent and efferent networks. Damage to the CP in multiple sclerosis (MS) could lead to serious cognitive and mobility impairment. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent and the clinical impact of CP damage in MS.

Biosynthesis, characterization of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and evaluations of the cytotoxicity and DNA damage of human breast carcinoma cell lines.

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized using Albizia adianthifolia leaf extract as reducing and protecting agent. Colour changing, UV-Vis spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the biosynthesis and characterization of MNPs. The XRD pattern revealed that MNPs are crystalline in nature.
