Modelling and palaeoclimate evidence suggest that rapidly increasing temperatures in the Arctic can trigger positive feedback mechanisms for the GrIS, leading to self-sustained melting, and the GrIS has been shown to permit several stable states. Critical transitions are expected when the global mean temperature (GMT) crosses specific thresholds, with substantial hysteresis between the stable states.

In the present work, we demonstrate through the case study of a piecewise-linear oscillator (PLO), that increasing the rate of forcing can make the system tip in some cases but might also prevent it from tipping in others. This counterintuitive effect is further called non-monotonous R-tipping (NMRT) and has already been observed in recent studies.

Molten salt reactor operation will necessitate circulation of a cover gas to remove certain evolved fission products and maintain an inert atmosphere. The cover gas leaving the reactor core is expected to contain both noble and non-noble gases, aerosols, volatile species, tritium, and radionuclides and their daughters. To remove these radioactive gases, it is necessary to develop a robust off-gas system, along with novel sensors to monitor the gas stream and the treatment system performance.

Background: Patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) often tolerate ventricular arrhythmias (VA). We aim to assess the frequency and outcomes of ICD therapies averted by ultraconservative ICD programming (UCP) in LVAD patients.
Methods: This single center, retrospective cohort study included patients with LVADs and ICDs implanted from 2015 to 2019 that had UCP.
Introduction: Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) can cause implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) oversensing. We sought to assess the frequency of inappropriate shocks/oversensing due to LVAD-related EMI and prospectively compare integrated (IB) versus dedicated bipolar (DB) sensing in patients with LVADs.
Methods: Single-center study in LVAD patients with Medtronic or Abbott ICDs between September 2017 and March 2020.
Bacterial endocarditis remains a challenging condition to manage owing to its variety of different presentations. This report describes a 55-year-old woman with endocarditis who presented confused with shoulder and back pain. Initial diagnosis was made difficult by a negative echocardiogram but aided by striking peripheral stigmata.

Organophosphate compounds (OPs) induce both acute and delayed neurotoxic effects, the latter of which is believed to involve their interaction with proteins other than acetylcholinesterase. National trends suggest that less than one in four patients experiencing in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) in the United States survive to discharge. This is especially relevant as the rates of IHCA are expected to rise in the years to come. Only a modest upward trend in survival to discharge among patients with IHCA over the past decade warrants evaluation of novel ideas to improve outcomes postcardiopulmonary resuscitation.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose Of Review: This paper reviews the recent literature on numerical modelling of the dynamics of the Greenland ice sheet with the goal of providing an overview of advancements and to highlight important directions of future research. In particular, the review is focused on large-scale modelling of the ice sheet, including future projections, model parameterisations, paleo applications and coupling with models of other components of the Earth system.
Recent Findings: Data assimilation techniques have been used to improve the reliability of model simulations of the Greenland ice sheet dynamics, including more accurate initial states, more comprehensive use of remote sensing as well as paleo observations and inclusion of additional physical processes.
Threats to wild and managed insect pollinators in Europe are cause for both ecological and socio-economic concern. Multiple anthropogenic pressures may be exacerbating pollinator declines. One key pressure is exposure to chemicals including pesticides and other contaminants.
