Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has made long-standing nursing workforce challenges apparent on an international scale. Decision-makers must develop multi-pronged approaches to foster the development and maintenance of a strong nursing workforce to support health systems. These approaches require attendance to recruitment and retention initiatives that show promise for stabilising the nursing workforce now and into the future.

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder caused by the loss of the SMN1 gene, with an estimated birth prevalence of about 1 in 10,000. Early intervention with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) significantly improves outcomes. This study evaluates the economic implications and health benefits of newborn screening (NBS) for SMA in Canada from the societal perspective.

The application of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to electroencephalography (EEG) data allows neuroscientists to track neural representations at temporally fine-grained scales. This approach has been leveraged to study the locus and evolution of long-term memory contents in the brain, but a limiting factor is that decoding performance remains low. A key reason for this is that processes such as encoding and retrieval are intrinsically dynamic across trials and participants, and this runs in tension with MVPA and other techniques that rely on consistently unfolding neural codes to generate predictions about memory contents.

Proton transfer is a fundamental process underlying chemical and biological phenomena, and its dynamics are significantly influenced by the surrounding environment. This paper studies the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, which is crucial to the photostability of hydroxyanthraquinone-based pigments through efficient energy dissipation, by investigating how crystalline packing influences photoinduced proton transfer dynamics in single crystals of dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ) constitutional isomers. Comparing the proton transfer dynamics in crystalline and solution phases, we show substantial differences due to the crystalline environment, particularly in the 1,4- and 1,5-DHAQ isomers.

The free-air CO enrichment (FACE) site at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) is situated in a long-established mature, temperate oak-dominated forest. Over the past 8 years, these tree species have been exposed to elevated CO (eCO target: 150 ppm above ambient). The observed eCO fertilization effect is significant in the mature oak trees, with sustained increases in photosynthesis and stem dry matter production.
