Crystallographic and Electroanalytical Analyses of Fexinidazole and Its Major Metabolites.

Fexinidazole, a drug active against trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, is a rare example of a nitroaromatic compound approved under the contemporary drug discovery framework. In an earlier study, we showed that the nitro group is absolutely required for antileishmanial activity. The current study employed X-ray crystallography to unveil the structural intricacies of fexinidazole and its principal metabolites, as well as electroanalytical analyses to characterize the reduction properties of the aromatic nitro group.

The influence of antibiotic and mechanical bowel preparation on the microbiome in colorectal cancer surgery: A pilot study.

Backround: The extent to which bowel preparation mechanical (MBP) or oral antibiotic (OA) or in combination (MBP/OA)) should be performed prior to elective colorectal surgery is the subject of ongoing debate. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of MPB/OA [with single-shot intravenous antibiotic administration before incision (MPB/OA+ivAB)] on the microbiome of patients with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) operated minimally-invasive.

Methods: We were studying 16 consecutive patients who underwent elective resection surgery for CRC at our centre in a prospective panel study.

Background: The Middle Miocene fauna of La Venta, Colombia, offers a grand opportunity to understand low-latitude South American ecosystems prior to the late Cenozoic Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). We present new material of two proterotheriid litopterns, Villarroelia totoyoi and Mesolicaphrium sanalfonense, and a macraucheniid litoptern, Theosodon, from La Venta. During the GABI, North and South American faunas intermixed, after which some lineages proliferated and others died out.
