The bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-SMAD signaling pathway is central to regulating hepcidin, the master regulator of systemic iron homeostasis. We have previously demonstrated that BMP6, BMP2, and, to a lesser extent, BMP5 are the major ligands contributing to hepcidin and iron homeostasis regulation in vivo. Hemojuvelin (HJV) and homeostatic iron regulator (HFE) are hepcidin modulators that are mutated in hereditary hemochromatosis.

Background: The translation of standard-of-care in acute ischemic stroke reperfusion interventions into practice is well established, but multifactorial obstacles exist in complete adoption, which has led to inequities in access and delivery of services. The objective of this study was to improve access and efficiency of ischemic stroke treatment across four Atlantic Canadian Provinces.

Methods: A stepped-wedge cluster trial was conducted over 30 months with 3 clusters covering 34 sites.

: In Ukraine women account for quarter of all people who inject drugs. Apart from several non-governmental organizations that provide advocacy and empowerment services to women who inject drugs (WWID), there are no integrated full-service health care facilities tailored specifically to the needs of WWID in Ukraine. They often have diminished access to drug use treatment, health and social services due to bureaucratic rules and processes at the institutions and stigmatizing attitudes among health care providers.

Objectives: To assess the imprecision and stability of the point-of-care troponin I assay in the Emergency Department and its correlation and bias to two central laboratory troponin I assays (Siemens Atellica and Abbott Alinity).

Methods: Imprecision and stability testing was performed on opportunistically selected samples using whole blood in the emergency department by non-laboratory trained personnel. Assay comparisons were undertaken on samples taken from participants of the Mersey Acute Coronary syndrome Rule Out Study.

Purpose: This study investigated the long-term progression of oscillatory potential (OP) implicit times (ITs) in individuals with preclinical diabetic retinopathy (DR) with and without levodopa (L-DOPA) treatment by quantifying functional and structural retinal changes.

Methods: Participants from the Motz et al. (2020) study were re-evaluated after 5 years, including individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) who received L-DOPA treatment for 2 weeks (the DM + L-DOPA group; n = 14), those who did not (the DM group; n = 6), and non-diabetic healthy controls (the control group; n = 37).
