Background: Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is uniquely positioned in the immune regulation of teleosts. Modifying the IL-10 pathway changes the teleost's disease susceptibility; however, there is no data on its post-transcriptional regulation. Trachinotus blochii is a high-value mariculture species.

Profiling the antioxidant biomarkers in marine fish larvae: a comparative assessment of different storage conditions to select the optimal strategy.

Research on antioxidant biomarkers can generate profound insights into the defense mechanisms of fish larvae against different stressors and can reveal manipulation strategies for improved growth and survival. However, the number of samples to process and unavailability of required infrastructure in larval-rearing facilities limit the immediate processing, requiring the preservation of specimens. Silver pompano (Trachinotus blochii), a potential marine aquaculture species, shows a low larval survival rate due to poorly developed antioxidant mechanism.

Background: Suboptimal management of depression in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often translates into poor glycemic control, medical complications, and impaired quality of life. Feasibility and effectiveness of collaborative care models of depression in diabetes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain unexplored. DIAbetes Mellitus ANd Depression (DIAMAND) study, a multicentric single-blind randomized controlled trial (SBRCT) comparing effectiveness of fluoxetine and mindfulness in primary care settings, addresses this gap in scientific literature.

Gender-Specific Correlates of Alcohol Use Among College Students in Kerala, India.

Background: Studies of alcohol use among college students in India have reported a male preponderance, but a recent large study suggested that alcohol use is increasing in young females. This increase in use among the young females is of concern as they experience poorer outcomes and a higher risk for addiction. Hence, we aimed to examine the gender-specific correlates of alcohol use among college students in the district of Ernakulum, Kerala.

Neurocognitive and clinical correlates of insight in schizophrenia.

Background: Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by various symptom dimensions and neurocognitive deficits. Impairment of insight is a core clinical symptom of the disorder. There has been an increasing focus on neurocognition and insight in schizophrenia; although, many studies fail to control for premorbid cognitive status.

The Effectiveness of a Brief Psychological Intervention for Patients with Diabetes-Related Distress.

Background: Diabetes-related distress (DRD) is the negative emotional and psychological reaction to living with diabetes mellitus (DM). DRD has been reported to affect glycemic control and self-management practices adversely. Limited research is available on the effectiveness of psychological interventions for DRD.

Hippocampus volume alterations and the clinical correlates in medication naïve obsessive compulsive disorder.

Background: Converging evidence suggests the role of hippocampus in the pathophysiology of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The role of hippocampus, which might have a cardinal role in the neurobiology of OCD through its mediating effect on various cognitive and affective processes, needs further investigation. This study is a region-of-interest analysis of hippocampal volume and its clinical correlates in a medication-naïve sample with low comorbidity rate.

Sertraline induced acute mandibular dystonia.

Specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been linked with the occurrence of drug-induced parkinsonism, dystonia, dyskinesia, and akathisia. Here, we describe a patient with a diagnosis of emotionally unstable personality disorder and depression who developed severe mandibular dystonia with sertraline in the absence of concurrent prescription of medications, which have potential action on the dopaminergic system. This case highlights the need for clinicians to be aware of this alarming acute adverse effect with sertraline, which is conventionally considered to be well-tolerated and safe.

Vitamin B₁₂ levels and psychiatric symptomatology: a case series.

Cobalamin (Vitamin B₁₂) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various neuropsychiatric disorders. A review of 19 patients (14 vegetarians) with demonstrable vitamin B₁₂ deficiency showed varied psychiatric symptomatology, with the majority not having significant hematological or neurological manifestations.

Metacognitive training for delusion in treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Metacognitive training for patients with schizophrenia (MCT) is a novel form of psychotherapy that aims to promote insight into the relationship between metacognitive deficits and psychotic symptoms, especially delusions. MCT has been found to be effective in reducing the delusional conviction and other positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. However, we are not aware of any research in which MCT has been used specifically to manage treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients.

Violence among psychiatric inpatients: a victim's perspective.

OBJECTIVE. Violence in psychiatric wards results in serious consequences and there is need for research to assess it in various settings to enable improvements in safety within psychiatric facilities. This study aimed to assess the inpatient violence from victims' perspective, in settings where family members accompanied patients during inpatient stay and played a significant role in caregiving.

Obsessive compulsive disorder masquerading as psychosis.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is commonly regarded as a disorder with good insight. However, it has now been recognized that insight varies in these patients. Pathological beliefs seem to lie on a continuum of insight, with full insight at one end and delusion at the other.

Short-term diagnostic stability of acute psychosis: data from a tertiary care psychiatric center in South India.

Context: Studies on acute psychosis in patients from India report good outcome. A small proportion of these patients may suffer relapses or other develop major psychiatric disorders later.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the diagnostic stability of acute psychosis in patients from India.

Late-onset clozapine-induced agranulocytosis in a patient with comorbid multiple sclerosis.

The risk of clozapine-induced agranulocytosis is highest in the initial 6 months after onset of treatment. There have been very few reports of neutropenia and agranulocytosis after this period. We report a unique case of delayed clozapine-induced agranulocytosis in a patient with preexisting multiple sclerosis (MS) which was treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

Piracetam treatment in patients with cognitive impairment.

Piracetam is a cognitive-enhancing agent that is used for the treatment of cognitive impairments of various etiologies. Little is known about its side effect profile, especially in those with psychiatric illness. We herewith present two cases with cognitive impairment who had contrasting responses to piracetam.

Hyperthyroidism presenting as mixed affective state: a case report.

Thyroid disorders have long been associated with psychiatric illness, commonly mood disorders. In bipolar disorder, hypothyroidism is quite a common abnormality. Little is known about the association of thyroid disorders and mixed affective states.

Beneficial effects of add-on raloxifene in schizophrenia.

The role of estrogens in schizophrenia has been proposed from the observation of schizophrenia occurring later and with symptom severity being lesser in women. Utility of estrogens in treatment of psychoses, though seen to be useful, comes with inherent risks of neoplasias, given its agonistic action on breast and endometrium. This risk can be overcome with use of selective estrogen receptor modulators, like raloxifene.

Response rate of catatonia to electroconvulsive therapy and its clinical correlates.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important treatment for catatonia. We aimed to study the response rate of catatonia treated with ECT and its clinical correlates in a large sample of inpatients. The ECT parameters of all patients (n = 63) admitted with catatonia between the months of January and December 2007 were examined.

Successful use of maintenance electroconvulsive therapy in the treatment of clozapine-associated obsessive-compulsive symptoms in schizophrenia: a case report.

Denovo obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms are associated with the use of atypical antipsychotics, clozapine in particular. Treatment of clozapine-associated OC symptoms is challenging and often difficult because continuation of clozapine can result in worsening of OC symptoms, whereas discontinuation may result in worsening of psychosis. We report, for the first time, the use of maintenance electroconvulsive therapy, in clozapine-associated OC symptoms, in a patient with schizophrenia.
