Background: The study investigated correlations between adenosine triphosphate / chemotherapy response assay (ATP-CRA) and clinical outcomes after ATP-CRA-guided platinum-based chemotherapy for unresectable nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: The authors performed an in vitro chemosensitivity test, ATP-CRA, to evaluate the chemosensitivities of anticancer drugs such as cisplatin, carboplatin, paclitaxel, docetaxel, gemcitabine, and vinorelbine for chemonaive, unresectable NSCLC. The cell death rate was determined by measuring the intracellular ATP levels of drug-exposed cells compared with untreated controls.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a co-carcinogen of lung cancer and contributes to its pathogenesis. To evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to detect HPV 16, 18, and 33 DNA in tumor tissues of 112 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent curative surgery from Jan. 1995 to Dec.

Purpose: A chemosensitivity test can reflect the differences in responses of individual cancer patients to chemotherapeutic agents. The adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay (ATP-CRA) is an accurate method, which does not require a large amount of tissue specimen. So far, no studies have evaluated the utility of the ATP-CRA in Korea.

Bone metastasis is common in lung cancer patient and the diagnosis of bone metastasis is usually made by using imaging techniques, especially bone scintigraphy. However, the diagnostic yield from bone scintigraphy is limited. The aim of this study is to assess the clinical usefulness of urinary pyridinoline cross-linked N-telopeptides of Type I collagen (NTx), urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD), and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the assessment of bone metastasis in patients with lung cancer.

The assessment of the adenosine deaminase activity (ADA) in the pleural effusion is used for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE). To examine whether the procedure can be applied to immunocompromised patients, we analyzed the ADA activity in the pleural fluid of renal transplant recipients. We studied 23 renal transplant patients with TPE (21 men and 2 women; the mean age, 33 years).

Background: The aim of this study was to document the prognosis of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) according to new the World Health Organization (WHO) classification.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 150 patients with TETs that were confirmed pathologically during 11 years (from 1992 to 2002) in Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea.

Results: TETs were classified as type A, AB, B1, B2, B3, or C, tumors and these represented 7 (4.

Background: To define the final outcome of large cell carcinomas (LCC) after surgical treatment, the histopathology, clinical features and follow-up results of 28 cases were reviewed.

Methods: Twenty eight patients, with LCC that underwent a surgical resection between 1986 and 2001, at the Severance Hospital, were retrospectively reviewed. We analyzed clinical data, radiological findings, pathologic findings, treatment modalities, and survival.

Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the clinical features of large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the histopathology and clinical information of 37 patients with LCNEC, diagnosed between June 1992 and May 2002 at the Severance Hospital, and performed immunohistochemical (IHC) staining.

Results: The prevalence of LCNEC among primary lung cancers was 0.
