Despite long being considered to be passive and supportive cells, in the last decades astrocytes have arisen as key regulators of neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission and plasticity. Since the discovery of the tripartite synapse, accumulating evidence suggests that astrocytes are involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, including α-synucleinopathies. Here we will discuss recent evidence showing that astrocytes express endogenous α-synuclein and the implications of this protein in astrocyte cellular processes.

Background: Uncovering the epigenomic regulation of immune response is essential for a comprehensive understanding of host defense mechanisms, though it remains poorly investigated in farmed fish.

Results: We report the first annotation of the response of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) immune cells to viral (poly I:C) and bacterial (inactive Vibrio anguillarum) mimics, integrating RNA sequencing with assay for transposase-accessible chromatin (ATAC) sequencing (ATAC-seq) and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) (H3K4me3, H3K27ac, and H3K27me3) data from head kidney (in vivo) and primary leukocyte cultures (in vitro) 24 hours after stimulation. Among the 8,797 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), we observed enrichment of transcriptional activation pathways in response to Vibrio and immune pathways-including interferon-stimulated genes-for poly I:C.

This study aimed to analyze whether oscillometric blood pressure devices validated for the general population may be considered approved under Universal Standard criteria. A systematic review was conducted, with searches in nine databases, up to September 2023, including 32 validation studies of noninvasive arm cuff devices for self-measurement. The British Hypertension Society protocol was most common (68%), followed by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (40%).
