Unlabelled: The respiratory rate-oxygenation index (ROXi) has been shown to be a reliable tool for predicting the risk of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) failure in adult patients with lower respiratory tract infections. However, the usefulness of the ROXi in paediatrics remains to be shown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the ROXi collected at the initiation of HFNC in the paediatric ward to predict HFNC failure in cases of bronchiolitis.

Unlabelled: This international survey aimed to describe worldwide norepinephrine prescription habits in pediatric intensive care units (PICU) in case of hypotensive shock. We sought to identify reporting Querydiscrepancies regarding dosing units and conjugated salts of norepinephrine. Between November 1, 2023, and February 10, 2024, a cross-sectional electronic survey was emailed to PICU prescribers through the following networks: PICURe (French-speaking countries), ESPNIC (Europe), Be-PICS (Belgium), PALISI (America), PACCMAN (Asia), JSPICC (Japan), and ANZICS PSG (Oceania).

Background: Intensive care units (ICU) are characterized by high medical assistance costs and great complexity. Recommendations to determine the needs of medical staff are scarce, generating appreciable variability. The French Intensive Care Society (FICS) and the French National Council of Intensive Care Medicine (CNP MIR, Conseil National Professionel de Médecine Intensive Réanimation) have established a technical committee of experts, the purposes of which were to draft recommendations regarding staffing needs in ICUs and to propose optimal organisation of work hours, a key objective being improved workplace quality of life.

Aim: The relationship between bronchiolitis and asthma is complex. We assessed whether patients admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with bronchiolitis had a greater risk of developing asthma than patients admitted to a paediatric ward.

Methods: We retrospectively included children under 1 year of age, who were hospitalised for bronchiolitis for the first time at the University Hospital of Caen, France, between 2010 and 2014.

Article Synopsis
  • Chest pain is common in pediatric emergencies, with most causes being benign; however, chest x-rays (CXR) are frequently ordered despite low rates of abnormalities.
  • A study reviewed medical records of 599 children to assess the adherence of physicians to guidelines for CXR usage, finding that 57.1% followed the recommended algorithm and only 8.2% had abnormal CXR results.
  • The findings suggest the need for improved guidelines for CXR prescriptions based on specific clinical indicators of chest pain, as current practices may overuse this test despite its limited diagnostic value.
