Modern Great Salt Lake, UT, United States, is what remains after the extensive evaporation of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, which makes this site an appropriate analog to ancient martian lacustrine systems. Today, evaporite minerals surround the lake, including recently precipitated displacive gypsum selenite crystals. Our hypothesis was that hydrated clay solid inclusions within the gypsum would support microbial life with water and nutrients, while the mineral encasement would provide protection from ultraviolet light and temperature fluctuations.

Haloquadratum walsbyi is generally the dominant species in hypersaline ecosystems at salt saturation conditions. Here, we followed the dynamics of its genomovars and associated viruses during recurrent evaporation-dilution disturbances of varying intensities at the mesocosm scale over 813 days. The diversity observed within a single mesocosm was also compared with that in a global-scale inventory of hypersaline environments of thalassohaline origin.

While there are many postulates for the etiology of post-viral chronic fatigue and other symptomatology, little is known. We draw on our past experience of these syndromes to devise means which can expose the primary players of this malady in terms of a panoply participating biomolecules and the state of the stool microbiome. Using databases established from a large dataset of patients at risk of colorectal cancer who were followed longitudinally over 3 decades, and a smaller database dedicated to building a Long PASC cohort (Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19), we were able to ascertain factors that predisposed patients to (and resulted in) significant changes in various biomarkers, i.
