The aim of the study was to isolate and characterize a population of neuronal progenitors in the human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) mononuclear cell (MNC) fraction, for in vitro manipulation towards neuronal differentiation. Selection of the HUCB neuronal progenitors (HUCBNPs) was based on the neuronal prerequisite for adherence to collagen. Populations of collagen-adherent, nestin-positive (94.

Here we report that immature human CD34+ cells dynamically expressed dopamine and beta2-adrenergic receptors, with higher expression in the primitive CD34+CD38(lo) population. The myeloid cytokines G-CSF and GM-CSF upregulated neuronal receptor expression on immature CD34+ cells.

JAK2 V617F mutation is found in a high proportion of MPD patients. We developed a quantitative assay for the detection of the JAK2 mutation and demonstrated its clinical utility in MPD patients who underwent SCT. Sixty percent of the patients were JAK2 V617F positive prior to the SCT (mean mutation levels 74%, range 16-98%).

Patients And Methods: Six hundred forty-six patients were randomly assigned to receive either intravenous bortezomib 1.3 mg/m(2) on days 1, 4, 8, and 11 of an every 21-days cycle, or the same bortezomib regimen with PLD 30 mg/m(2) on day 4.
It is a major interest in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to reduce scarring of healing wounds with overdeposition of collagen due to radiation injury or graft-versus-host disease. Halofuginone (HF) inhibits collagen alpha1(I) gene expression and overdeposition of collagen. We examined the effect of HF on the healing of full-depth incision wounds inflicted in normal skin or skin areas compromised by local preirradiation with 18 Gy.

Ploidy status and chromosomal aberrations involving chromosome 13q and the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus (IgH) are important prognostic features in multiple myeloma (MM). However, conventional cytogenetic studies are often not reveling and determination of plasma cells (PC) ploidy status in MM is technically difficult. We have used a combined cell morphology and interphase FISH (I-FISH) analysis in 184 consecutive BM samples from 136 MM patients for the diagnosis of chromosome 13q deletion [del (13q)] and IgH abnormalities.

Therefore, an approach that improves stem cell mobilization is essential. The interaction between CXCL12 and its receptor, CXCR4, is involved in the retention of stem cells in the bone marrow.

Human umbilical cord blood (CB) has established itself as a legitimate source for hematopoeitic stem cell transplantations. Since the first transplantation was performed in 1988, it is estimated that approximately 4,000 patients, with malignant and non-malignant diseases, were transplanted with CB. Comparing to bone marrow transplants, cord blood's collection is easier and safer.

Patients And Methods: The study included 23 patients, median age 55 years (range, 35-66) with chemo-refractory lymphoma, either primary refractory (n = 11) or in refractory relapse (n = 12). Rituximab 250 mg/m(2) followed by ibritumomab tiuxetan 0.
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a stem cell disorder that eventually progresses to a blast crisis phase (BC) characterized by distorted apoptotic pathways. The exact mechanism leading to failure in apoptotic pathways during CML progression is unclear. In view of the central role of p53 and apaf1 in the apoptotic machinery we examined six human paired chronic and BC phases samples for their expression.

Glucocerebroside (GC) is a naturally occurring glycolipid that plays a role in the immune modulation of NKT lymphocytes. This study aims to determine the effect of GC in murine models of semiallogeneic/acute and chronic GVHD.

The transition of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is characterized by expression of smooth muscle genes and profuse synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins. We evaluated the efficacy of targeting fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition with halofuginone on tumor progression in prostate cancer and Wilms' tumor xenografts.

The mechanism of induced mobilization has recently been elucidated. Treatment with G-CSF is considered safe; however, long-term effects are largely unknown.

Heparanase is a mammalian endoglucuronidase responsible for heparan sulfate (HS) degradation. HS is a major constituent of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and HS-degrading activity plays a decisive role in fundamental biological processes associated with remodeling of the ECM, such as cancer metastasis, angiogenesis and inflammation. There is great interest in the prospect of genome-wide association studies to identify genetic factors underlying complex diseases.

Purpose: Nucleated cell dose is an important and modifiable factor in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), however its association with outcomes in the context of reduced intensity conditioning regimen (RIC) HSCT for adults with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) is not known.
Patients And Methods: From 1998 to 2003, 253 patients with de novo AML, received transplants with RIC and peripheral blood from a genoidentical donor. Median age was 55 years (range, 18 to 72) and the median follow-up was 17 months (range, 2 to 67).
Stem cell transplantation (SCT)-related salivary gland injury and dysfunction result in local and systemic manifestations that may be long lasting and are associated with a high rate of morbidity and increased risk of infection. The salivary antioxidant system may have a major protective role. We, therefore, assessed salivary antioxidant capacity and function in 30 patients who had undergone SCT: 18 males and 12 females whose median age was 36 years (range: 7-58).

Methods: We induced SGS in 10 dogs randomly divided into 2 groups.
As the significance of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is constantly rising, the scarcity of matched donors is proving to be a troubling issue. Cord blood (CB) is an important source of stem cells (SC) for transplantation. It has been used in the last two decades for approximately 4500 transplantations.

The 5 year survival rate of patients with metastatic disease is less than 5% with a median survival of only 6-10 months. Drugs like dacarbazin (DTIC) as a single agent or in combination with other chemotherapy agents have a response rate of 15-30%, but the duration of response is usually short with no impact on survival.

The mechanism(s) that regulates NK cell mobilization and the significance of this process to NK cell activity are unknown. After Con A-induced hepatitis, NK cells are mobilized from the spleen and bone marrow into the periphery in an IFN-gamma-dependent fashion. Intraperitoneal administration of IFN-gamma stimulates the mobilization of NK cells into the circulation, but not their cell death or proliferation.
